The free palace rule
Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung, Jongmyo. The rental shop's basic hanbok counts. Each palace ticket is normally ₩3,000, so visiting Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung covers the rental cost on entry alone.
Read before you book What counts at the ticket booth
Modern fusion hanbok with bare midriff or short skirt does not count at the ticket booth. Standard rental hanbok is fine.
You must be wearing it when you arrive. Carrying hanbok in a bag does not qualify.
Each palace ticket is ₩3,000. Gyeongbokgung + Changdeokgung = ₩6,000 saved instantly.
Where to rent, by cluster
Gyeongbokgung Palace Gyeongbokgung (Line 3)
Dense cluster of rental shops on the street running south of the palace. 30+ shops within 4 minutes of Exit 5. Highest tourist volume; competitive prices.
Bukchon Hanok Village Anguk (Line 3)
Boutique shops mixed in among hanok stays. Fewer but more curated rental options than the Gyeongbokgung cluster. Premium hanbok stocks here.
Insadong Anguk (Line 3)
Mid-range shops along Insadong-gil. Convenient if you are already shopping the street; not the densest rental cluster.
Changdeokgung Palace Anguk (Line 3)
Light cluster near the palace entrance. Most visitors rent in Bukchon or Gyeongbokgung first, then walk over.

Light layers, not jeans
Hanbok skirts sit high on the chest. Jeans bunch up under it. Wear leggings, shorts, or a slip dress.
Comfortable shoes
The rental's traditional flats are flat-soled. You'll walk 2-4 km doing the palace and Bukchon loop. Trainers work fine; the long skirt covers them.
Hair styling is usually free
Most shops include a basic braided or pinned set. Premium packages add full hair and makeup.
Sunscreen and a small bag
Hanbok has no pockets. The shop holds your main bag; carry only what fits in a small pouch.
Best light at Gyeongbokgung
4-6 PM in summer, 2-4 PM in winter. The 10 AM royal guard ceremony is popular but crowded.
Return before close
Standard 4-hour deadline is strict. ₩5,000-10,000 per hour late fee. Set a phone alarm 30 minutes before.
