Refund flow

Airport refund kiosk in South Korea 2026

Roughly 5-8% of receipt total, paid at the kiosk.

Self-service kiosk or staffed counter at Incheon T1, T2, and Gimpo for high-value receipts.

The airport refund flow covers two cases: receipts above the ₩1,000,000 per-transaction cap that bypass instant refund, and refunds where the store deferred to the airport (some smaller stores hand you a tax-refund slip instead of deducting at checkout). You claim the refund after passing security and immigration, at a self-service kiosk or staffed Customs counter near the departure gates.

Incheon Terminal 1 has the airport refund infrastructure near Gate 28 (Customs office + Customs Service kiosks). Incheon Terminal 2 has it near Gate 249. Gimpo Airport has a smaller counter on the departure floor. The kiosks accept the passport scan, your departure boarding pass, and the tax-refund slips from the retailers. After kiosk processing, you may be asked by a Customs officer to physically show the purchased items - so keep them in your carry-on, packaging intact, until you clear Customs.

Refund payout happens immediately at the airport: cash in KRW, USD, or your card / Alipay / WeChat Pay account credit. The kiosk lets you pick the payout currency. Allow 20-30 minutes extra at the airport for the refund flow at peak departure times (Friday and Sunday evenings have the longest queues at both ICN terminals).

Step by step

  1. Keep all tax-refund slips from your shopping trip in one envelope.
  2. Keep the purchased items in your carry-on, unopened where possible.
  3. After security at ICN T1 (near Gate 28), T2 (near Gate 249), or Gimpo: find the Customs office.
  4. Customs officer may ask to physically inspect the items. Show the carry-on contents.
  5. After Customs clearance, scan your passport + boarding pass + slips at the refund kiosk.
  6. Pick payout method: cash (KRW / USD), card credit, or Alipay / WeChat Pay.
  7. Receive the refund instantly.

Eligibility

  • Receipts ₩15,000+ that were issued a tax-refund slip (vs deducted at the register).
  • Single receipts ₩1,000,000+ that bypassed instant refund.
  • Departure within 3 months of the purchase date.
  • Items leaving Korea with you (Customs may verify).

What to bring

  • Passport.
  • Boarding pass (printed or digital) for the same-day departure.
  • Original tax-refund slips from the retailers.
  • The purchased items - unopened where possible, in carry-on for the Customs check.

Watch out for

  • Refund kiosks are AFTER security and immigration. Allow 30 minutes extra at peak departures.
  • Customs may ask to physically inspect items - keep purchases out of checked luggage.
  • Lost tax-refund slip = no refund. Keep them in a dedicated envelope.
  • Some kiosks accept card / Alipay / WeChat payout; if you want cash, find the staffed counter.
  • Items packed in checked luggage that Customs cannot verify can be denied refund.

When to use this flow

Use the airport flow when (a) any single receipt was ₩1,000,000+, (b) the store handed you a refund slip instead of deducting at the register, or (c) your cumulative spend during the trip exceeded ₩5,000,000.

Refund value

Roughly 5-8% of receipt total, paid at the kiosk. Same net rate band as the instant-refund flow; just claimed later.
