Where solo gets awkward

Korean BBQ (samgyeopsal / hanwoo) Usually 2-person minimum

Most places have a 2-person minimum. Solo BBQ does exist: 1인 삼겹살 / honbap-yagi shops, but it is a distinct concept, not the default. Ask "1인분 가능해요?" (il-in-bun ganeunghae-yo, is one portion possible?).

Hot pot / shabu / budae-jjigae Usually 2-person minimum

Usually a 2-person minimum.

Premium fine-dining tasting menus Check before booking

Sometimes solo-friendly at the chef's counter bar, but check; many require 2 or more.

Drinking bars (pojangmacha / hof) Fine solo, slower pace

Solo is fine but you will drink slow. Some traditional pojangmacha hosts will make conversation.

Practical conventions

Counter seats over tables

Sit at the bar/counter if available. It signals "I am here to eat, not socialize" and you will get faster service.

Lunch hour 12-1pm

Busy with office workers eating alone. Plenty of company.

"1인분" (il-in-bun)

"One person portion" is the magic phrase for any cuisine that defaults to sharing.

Don't tip

Same as anywhere in Korea.

Cards accepted at most counters

Small old-school spots may be cash-only. Bring ₩30k.

Reading / phone is fine

Solo diners on phones are everywhere in Seoul cafés and at 1인 counters.

Best stations for solo dining
